Celcom revenue plunges … and 4 more things you should know: Page 4 of 5

During Q1 2016, Celcom recorded a net addition of 37,000 postpaid subscribers. This is also the company’s highest quarterly postpaid net adds since Q2 2015.

The boost in postpaid subscriber base was within industry expectations, as the Celcom First Gold plan had made a significant impact in the market.

According to its chief executive officer Shazalli Ramly, Celcom had been making under-50 postpaid activations daily before the First Gold plan was launched. Post-launch, it was doing over 3,000 postpaid activations daily.

The plan was launched in February. One may wonder: Shouldn’t its postpaid net adds be higher then? After all, if one assumes that it registered 3,000 postpaid activations over 45 days, shouldn’t it have recorded over 120,000 activations?

While the company did not go into details about where the net adds came from, the data does suggest the possibility of its existing subscribers merely switching plans.

Nevertheless, Jamaludin Ibrahim – president and chief executive officer of its parent company Axiata Group Bhd – remains confident on Celcom.

In a statement, he said: “I am pleased to note there are many positive signs – Celcom has been aggressively rolling out more LTE (Long-Term Evolution) sites and a number of competitive and exciting data products and services over the last two months.

“I am confident with these initiatives in place, Celcom will be back on track to finish the year respectably,” he added.
