Transit on Tour seeks fab five for primetime pitchCOME May 25, Transit on Tour will kick off its search for fresh startups outside the Klang Valley to compete for a chance to pitch their idea to Dave McClure, founder of Silicon Valley-based accelerator 500 Startups.

500 Startups provides early stage companies with up to US$250,000 in funding via its startup accelerator programme.

Notable companies that have emerged from the programme include image-based social media website 9GAG; business-to-business (B2B) social media marketing firm Wildfire Interactive; and TaskRabbit, an online and mobile marketplace that allows users to outsource small jobs and tasks to others in their neighbourhood.

McClure will be in Kuala Lumpur as part of the South-East Asia leg of Geeks On A Plane, an invite-only tour organised by 500 Startups for startups, investors and executives to learn about burgeoning technology markets worldwide.

“The main reason for this event is to look for undiscovered talent and startups which are located outside of the Klang Valley," said F.S. Lim, project coordinator for Transit on Tour.

"We will invite five startups from this entire trip to pitch to McClure -- this is a rare opportunity as this will be his first trip to Malaysia,” he added.

Five successful startups will be given a five-minute slot and one chance to impress McClure, during a private event slated to take place on June 6.

“During the Transit tour, participating startups will be given five-minute slots to pitch to our judges which consist of veterans in the Malaysian startup ecosystem,” Lim said.

Judges include Bikesh L (aka Mike Smith on Facebook) from 1337 Ventures, Andrew Tan from SI Camp, Ikwan Nazri from Amanz Network and Daniel Cerventus from NextupAsia.

When asked what tips he could give to aspiring startups on pitching at Transit on Tour, Lim pointed to a video by Founder Institute’s Adeo Ressi on the very topic (click here to watch the video).

“You can follow Adeo Ressi's FI pitch which makes it simple and structured, so you can focus on telling the story,” he said.

Transit on Tour will be visiting five cities/ towns: Melaka and Johor Bahru (May 25), Kota Bahru (May 26), Penang (May 27), Ipoh (May 28).

The event is organised by 1337 Accelerator, which is a joint venture between 1337 Ventures and Cyberview Sdn Bhd.

Interested startups are urged to register via the Transit website or visit the Transit KL Facebook Page to RSVP for talks and pitches.
