Sony introduces new RX0 action camera

THE market for action cameras may be more muted compared to previous years but at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, Sony took the wraps off its next big action camera, the DSC-RX0 or the RX Zero.

Marrying the cutting-edge image quality of Sony’s renowned RX series with a robust yet rugged ultra-compact body, the RX0 is adept at shooting still images and filming videos in almost any kind of setting.

Weighing just 110g, the RX0 redefines how a small and light an action camera can be. Ready for anything, the RX0 is waterproof at depths of up to 10m without the use of any casing. For divers who want to go deeper, there is an optional MPK-HSR1 housing that can be used to go down to a staggering 100m in depth.

In addition, the RX0 is shockproof when dropped from up to 2m and crushproof, making it durable enough to go where traditional cameras can’t go.

The RX0 utilised Sony’s 1-inch stacked 15.3-MEgapixel Exmor CMOS image sensor coupled with its Bionz X processor and a wide-angle Zeiss 24mm f/4 fixed lens delivering high resolution and less distorted results in both RAW and JPEG stills.

With an Anti-Distortion Shutter of up to 1/32,000 second, it can shoot up to a blazing 16 frames per second to capture fast-moving objects.

Part of the unique features of the RX0 is the ability to use multiple units in a multi-camera setup to create almost otherworldly footage from a multitude of different perspectives.

This can be done with Sony’s wireless radio commander, the FA-WRC1M which can be used to trigger up to 15 RX0s at once or the PlayMemories Mobile app for up to five RX0 models.

Made as an action camera for videographers, it incorporates super slow motion footage that can be shot at up to 1,000 frames per second. It can use 4K clean HDMI output to record uncompressed video to an external recorder. In addition, it has both manual focus assist and peaking functions precisely adjust focus.

Meanwhile, Picture Profile options and S-Log2 offer creative freedom to deliver the end result that you envisioned in your mind. T

ime Code / User Bit features provide an essential tool for multi-camera shoots, in particular, making the editing process a much easier experience, and Preset Focus options add a true element of control to a shoot.

According to Sony, the RX0 will be available in Malaysia from October 2017.
