AS PART of its ongoing Acer Day celebrations (themed “Freedom to Play” this time around), Acer Malaysia launched new additions to their Aspire series of laptops, as well as introduced a portable monitor.

“Acer Day was introduced in 2017 as a dedicated day to celebrate the brand’s achievements with customers by making available special offers, rewards and gifts across all ranges of Acer products,” says Acer Malaysia Consumer Business and Product director Johnson Seet.

“To add to this celebration, we are also introducing new devices to our workhorse series of Aspire and an innovative, new monitor that can be carried anywhere for presentations and sharing anytime.”

The new laptops would be the Acer Aspire 3 and 5, while the portable monitor is the Acer PM161Q Portable Monitor.

New aspirations

This iteration of the Aspire 5 has a 10% smaller footprint and is 16.7% lighter compared to its predecessor. It features a 14-inch IPS FHD display that has neat, narrow bezels to pack more screen estate into its smaller frame. It weighs in at 1.45kg, and has a backlit keyboard for those who type away into the night.

The base model comes with 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 20GB) with 256GB of PCIe SSD storage (you can also opt for HDD storage).

It comes in two variations – one with the Intel Core i5-8265U processor, which prices from US$601.15 (RM2,499); and one sporting Intel Core i7-8565U, priced from US$745.48 (RM3,099).

The new Aspire 3, on the other hand, offers a bigger 15.6-inch Full HD display. Its specifications are largely similar – there’s a version with the same Intel Core i5 processor but is instead bundled with 1TB of HDD storage.

This one prices from US$577 (RM2,399).

For the Intel Core i7 version, the laptop comes with 256GB of SSD storage. Pricing starts from US$745.48 (RM3,099). The Aspire 3 comes in three different colours: Obsidian Black, Indigo Blue and Rococo Red.

It’s worth noting that both new Aspire 3 and 5 laptops come with NVIDIA GeForce MX230 and MX240 graphics cards respectively.

On-the-go monitor

The Acer PM161Q portable monitor is something for those needing a second screen that they can cart around easily. With a weight of 0.97kg and a side profile of only 2cm, and it does look like it can fit snugly in a bag.

The display is a 15.6-inch FHD IPS screen offering 1920 x 1080 resolution, and being an IPS display it provides up to 170-degrees wide viewing angle. Refresh rate of the monitor is at 60hz, while brightness is at 200 nits.

Connectivity with a video source as well as powering up the monitor is done via a USB Type-C cable, and it supports laptops, tablets and –impressively – even smartphones. You don’t need an external power source for it.

It works pretty quickly as well – upon connecting to a source, the monitor can start displaying images within five seconds. The device is propped up using a kickstand, which fold out from the back of the monitor.

The Acer PM161Q comes with a protective sleeve and 3 years on-site warranty; it is available beginning September and is priced at US$144 (RM599).
