ST Telemedia enters big data space with investment in US-based Datameer

SINGAPORE Technologies Telemedia (ST Telemedia) said it was the lead investor in San Francisco, California-based big data analytics and visualisation company Datameer’s US$40-million financing round, with Top Tier Capital Partners joining in.

Existing investors including Redpoint Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Next World Capital, Citi Ventures and Software AG are also participating in the current round of financing, ST Telemedia said in a statement.

Proceeds from this current round of financing will go into funding Datameer’s growth initiatives across all business units, as well as its global expansion. ST Telemedia said it will also be represented in the US company’s board.

Datameer was founded in 2009 with the aim of combining the power of Hadoop with a spreadsheet interface, enabling business users to easily run analytics against very large data sets, with no programming required. Its customers now include financial institutions, telecommunications carriers and global companies.

Its last recorded investment was a US$19-million Series D round in December 2013, according to CrunchBase.

Datameer marks ST Telemedia’s first investment in big data and in an emerging technology vertical, underscoring its “commitment to continually seek new growth opportunities, expand its capabilities toward next-generation platforms, and capture synergies within its global portfolio,” it added.

The investment in Datameer will allow ST Telemedia to participate in the attractive growth potential in big data while enabling Datameer to tap on the Singapore-based company’s market insights, partnerships, and existing portfolio businesses to accelerate its expansion in the Asia Pacific region and globally.
