Wedding and motherhood e-commerce startup Nuren lands US$2mil Series A

MALAYSIAN wedding and baby e-commerce startup Nuren Group said it has completed a US$2-million Series A round, led by Gobi Partners.

Founded in September 2013, Nuren operates the Wedding.com.my and Motherhood.com.my portals in Malaysia, and nuren.sg in Singapore.

Prior to this round, it received RM1 million (US$250,000) from N Capital Partners and two unidentified angel investors.

Since launching, Nuren has connected over 300,000 couples with 1,500 vendors, it added.

With this round of investment, Nuren said it plans to accelerate user and sales growth across all target markets and verticals, and will bring on more employees to facilitate growth, and improve e-commerce capabilities and sales conversion.

The investment will allow the company to strengthen offline channels including bridal events, wedding workshops, venue partnerships, marriage registrars and more, it added.

It also plans to expand regionally, beyond its current two markets of Malaysia and Singapore, and aims to establish a presence across five countries in South-East Asia.

“In addition to our online presence, we have established strong partnerships with industry players like wedding associations and mother groups to reach out to our users,” said founder and chief executive officer Petrina Goh.

“We also have strategic collaborations with bridal and motherhood fair organisers and magazine publishers.

“In this way, we make sure we can successfully reach out to users in an early and comprehensive way as they begin the planning process for weddings and new additions to their families,” she added.

Nuren said it takes a content and community approach to e-commerce, allowing users to interact, engage and share ideas with one another.

The company also serves as an online platform for industry vendors to connect with users, generate leads and complete sales.

Wedding.com.my offers couples a one-stop shop for wedding planning, providing a wide range of products and services to help users plan their weddings more conveniently and affordably.

Motherhood.com.my is for mothers and expecting mothers to care for themselves and their children. Currently operating as content and directory portal, the site will officially launch marketplace features in mid-2016, offering important products and services across maternity, infant and children categories.

“Nuren Group is led by female entrepreneurs who understand motherhood and the challenges mothers face,” said Gobi Partners managing partner Thomas G. Tsao.
