Singapore operators hit 4G targets ahead of timeline: IDA survey

MOBILE network operators (MNOs) in Singapore have generally achieved significant nationwide street-level 4G service coverage for their respective networks, approximately 18 months ahead of a June 30 2016 timeline, according to the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).

The IDA began surveying MNOs 4G (Fourth Generation) network performance, with the aim of promoting greater awareness and transparency to consumers.

It started conducting the surveys from the fourth quarter of 2014 to measure the 4G service coverage around Singapore, the IDA said in a statement.

M1 and SingTel Mobile attained more than 99% coverage, and StarHub Mobile achieved 98.95% coverage, it added.

IDA’s survey also showed that the rollout for 4G service coverage in underground road/ train tunnels can be improved: StarHub Mobile rolled out its network to provide coverage for most of the road and train tunnels, while M1 and SingTel Mobile have provided coverage for two and four road/ train tunnels respectively.

“Singapore has a high mobile penetration rate, and the 4G subscription rates are increasing every month,” said Leong Keng Thai, IDA’s deputy chief executive and director-general (Telecoms & Post).

“Consumers enjoy these higher speed connections, and expect these services to be widely and readily available throughout the country.

“These published results will help consumers make informed choices as they sign up or renew their mobile service plans,” he added.

Singapore MNOs are required to provide nationwide coverage by June 30 2016, and by June 30 2018 for road and train tunnels, following the issuance of the spectrum rights for the 1800MHz and 2.5GHz bands in June 2013.

The IDA is also studying the standards that may be set for the 4G Quality of Service Standard framework for compliance purpose.
