INDIA and Malaysia have agreed to embark on joint activities as well as to share information and knowledge on cybersecurity.
This comes after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation between CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) of India’s Department of Electronics and Information Technology.
The MoU signing on Nov 23 was witnessed by the prime ministers of both countries, Malaysia’s Najib Razak and India’s Narendra Modi, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya.
Modi was in Malaysia to attend the newly concluded 27th Asean Summit. It was his first official visit to Malaysia since assuming his premiership in 2014.
The MoU between both countries was signed by CSM chief executive officer Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab and Indian Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Anil Wadhwa.
Under the MoU, India and Malaysia will conduct joint activities in cybersecurity during the first meeting of The Joint Working Group on Information Technology And Services (JWG-ITS), which comes in the wake of the Cyber Security Cooperation Committee held in October 2011 in Cyberjaya.
Both countries officially agreed to also promote closer cooperation and the exchange of information pertaining to cybersecurity in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations of each country, CSM said in a statement.
According to CSM’s Amirudin, the MoU also establishes a broader framework for future dialogue in cybersecurity incident management.
“The MoU will also allow cybersecurity technology cooperation and human resources exchange, as well as the exchange of information on cyberattacks, mutual response to cybersecurity incidents, cybersecurity policies and best practices,” he said in an official statement.
