- E-commerce growth seen as important part of Digital Malaysia agenda
- Also targeting regional shoppers from Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia
MALAYSIA’S national ICT custodian Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) has announced that the country’s biggest online sales event #MyCyberSale will take place from Sept 28 to Oct 2 this year, involving more than 400 e-commerce retailers and promising discounts of up to 90%.
#MyCyberSale is an initiative under Digital Malaysia to boost e-commerce growth, seen as an important contributor to the digital economy. MDeC is the lead government agency for Digital Malaysia, a programme that aims to transform Malaysia into a digital economy by 2020.
#MyCyberSale aims to increase domestic e-commerce revenue by encouraging SMEs (small and medium enterprises) to be part of e-commerce ecosystem, and by generating online shopping demand from consumers, MDeC said in a statement.
The first #MyCyberSale in 2014 generated RM67 million in revenue from 227,000 successful transactions, with over a 200% increase in online traffic reported by participating e-tailers, the agency said.
This year, the sales event is also expanding to target regional shoppers, specifically those from Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia, it added.
“Given the great response last year … #MyCyberSale is bigger and better to continue growing the e-commerce industry and bringing the ecosystem together to embrace the Digital Malaysia agenda,” said MDeC chief executive officer Yasmin Mahmood.
This year sales event will host over 400 participating e-tailers, 40% more than last year, including those outside the Klang Valley, such as from the states of Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, MDeC said.
More popular marketplaces such as 11street.my, GemFive, Go Shop, Qoo10 and Agrobazaar have also joined the line-up this year, alongside Lazada, Zalora, Lelong.my, Rakuten and Groupon.
The sales event promises exclusive deals of up to 90% discounts on a wide range of products including clothes and accessories, children and baby products, home and living, books and media, health and beauty, electronics, travel and more, MDeC said in its statement.
MDeC said it is also introducing the #MyCyberSale app (pic), which will be available for download for Android and iOS devices from Sept 21 onwards.
There will be lucky draw contests with prizes worth more than RM50,000 this year. Maybank and Visa have also come on board as official promotion partners.
#MyCyberSale is endorsed by the Ministry of Communications & Multimedia.
It is also supported by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism, which oversees the overall E-Commerce Act, regulation and buyer protection; industry regulator the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC); SME Corp which governs the participation of Malaysian SMEs; and CyberSecurity Malaysia, which oversees e-commerce and cyberspace security, code of conduct and trust.
