Toshiba Medical Systems Corp sets up JV subsidiary in MalaysiaJAPAN’S Toshiba Medical Systems Corporation (TMSC) has established Toshiba Medical Systems Malaysia Sdn Bhd as a joint venture corporation with TMSC's distributor in Malaysia, Abex Medical System Sdn Bhd.

The new company will start business on June 12 as a TMSC subsidiary, operating out of Abex’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

TMSC is an 80-year-old subsidiary of Tokyo-based Fortune 500 company Toshiba Corp. It provides medical diagnostic imaging systems and comprehensive medical solutions such as CT (computer tomography), X-ray and vascular, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) systems, as well as information systems for medical institutions.

A high economic growth rate of approximately 5% or more is expected in South-East Asia, and economic development will lead to an increase in population and changes in disease prevalence patterns, Toshiba said in a statement.

The medical market in this region is estimated to be about 40 billion yen (US$381 million), according to research by TMSC, and continued expansion is expected.

Among these countries, Malaysia, with its advanced healthcare, is actively promoting medical tourism as one of the nation's growth industries, and is receiving large numbers of patients from abroad.

In order to provide top-quality healthcare in Malaysia, there is a growing need among medical institutions to install cutting-edge medical technologies such as Toshiba's Aquilion ONE area detector CT systems, the company claimed.

TMSC started business in Malaysia in August 1981 through Abex and has implemented local sales and service activities.

With the advantage of collaboration with globally expanded R&D and training centres, both within and outside Japan, the establishment of a subsidiary in Malaysia will allow the latest Toshiba systems to be used to their fullest potential, it added.

TMSC said it would continue its efforts to contribute to healthcare in Malaysia and other South-East Asian countries by enhancing products with high added value and strengthening its service system to meet market needs.
