Dell sets up innovation lab at MMU in Malaysia

MULTIMEDIA University (MMU) has announced the launch of the Dell Innovation Lab, in partnership with Dell Malaysia, at its Cyberjaya campus.

The new lab, a joint initiative of MMU’s Faculty of Computing and Informatics and Dell Malaysia, will equip young Malaysians with the tools to thrive in the field of big data and analytics, Dell said in a statement.

“Dell’s sponsorship of PowerEdge servers and Dell Precision workstations will be very useful for our MMU researchers and students who require high performance computing,” said MMU president Prof Dr Muhamad Rasat Muhamad.

MMU had previously partnered with Dell in activities such as big data hackathons, technology updates by Dell to MMU’s faculty, and postgraduate opportunities for Dell staff, he added.

“The amount of data is increasing exponentially and our information behaviour is changing faster than [our] information systems,” said Dell chief information officer Paul Walsh.

“Investments in information systems, like this lab, will enable users to find the patterns in the data.  Identifying patterns of customer behaviour is critical in achieving personalisation for customers and is crucial to the future of commerce.

“By collaborating with MMU to open this lab, we are fostering the next generation of data scientists who will be able to find the patterns in the data, communicate their findings, and ultimately influence how organisations run their business,” he added.

MMU, originally known as Universiti Telekom, was established in July 1996 as a subsidiary of telco giant Telekom Malaysia Bhd. In 2014, MMU made it to the QS Top 200 World University Ranking by Subject, in Computer Science and Information Systems
