THE Selangor-Barcelona collaboration for Smart City & Future Commerce was concluded at the Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards on Saturday, Sept 9, marking the end of the first element of the Selangor International Business Summit 2017, a 10-day event held at the Setia City Convention Centre from Sept 7 - 17.

The Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards is an annual competition organised by the Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (Sitec) with the support of Invest Selangor Bhd.

Established as a way to honour and reward enterprising, creative, and innovative online merchants as well as a way to get the public acquainted with the faces behind their favourite brands, the awards saw their inaugural run in 2016, where over 70 merchants competed and more than 30,000 people voted for their favourite merchants.

In its second iteration this year, the competition saw the participation of over 100 Malaysian-owned online merchants with over 80,000 online votes -- they competed with each other for the grand prize of RM10,000 as part of the RM25,000 prize pool.

The awards ceremony was officiated by Investment, Industry & Commerce, SMEs and Transportation Senior Executive Councilor Teng Chang Khim.

The total prize pool of RM25,000 will go to the top 10 finalists, all of whom will go home with cash and the following prize set: a trophy, a certificate, an SDCC online marketing course and an eCommerce & internet marketing workshop.

All participating companies were judged on four core areas, namely on their products, the quality of their service, their activity on social media, and the participant’s sales and transaction volumes.

Judging was split between online voting and the competition’s panel of judges with a 50-50 split, with the panel of judges featuring eCommerce players.

The 10th to 4th place finalists each went home with RM1,000 cash each, on top of the prize set.
