- New POP to address increasing demand of IP services in Indochina
TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) said it has signed an agreement with Lao National Internet Centre (Lanic), which manages Internet exchange points and acts as the International Internet Gateway (IIG) for Laos.
Through this collaboration, Lanic – an affiliate of Laos’ Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications – will host and provide network infrastructure for TM’s Point-of-Presence (POP) in the country, TM said in a statement.
The Malaysian telco giant would thus be able to provide alternative connectivity solution to its customers as well as address the growing demands for international Internet bandwidth in Laos, the company said.
The provisioning of these alternative connectivity solutions will be done through diverse routes, connecting to TM’s other POPs in Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Penh and Hong Kong, it added.
The POP located in Lanic’s international data centre in Vientiane will deliver IPVPN, IP Transit and Global Ethernet services.
TM said this would allow it to further extend its network reachability into the Indochina region, where the market is forecast to grow exponentially, although it did not provide figures.
“This alliance with Lanic will further strengthen our regional footprint in South-East Asia,” said Mohamed Asri Jaafar, vice president of Product Marketing & Operations at TM’s Global & Wholesale unit.
“Through the new POP, we will be able to offer a vast range of services at a competitive price,” he added.
To date, TM has 22 POPs worldwide across five regions: Asia, Australia, North America, Europe and the Middle East.
Ultimately, this collaboration will enable TM’s end customers in the Indochina region to leverage on its international infrastructure, the company said.
