Govt rebate a boost to smartphone demand in Malaysia: IDC
According to IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone shipments -- boosted by the Malaysian Government’s Youth Communication Package (YCP) -- accounted for approximately 49.6% of total mobile phone shipments for the first half of 2013, a significant jump from the 31.8% recorded during the same period last year.

Even as the MCMC staunchly defended the reasons for imposing a price-cap on the contentious smartphone rebate for youths, the Government did a backflip and removed it, leaving the regulator in the lurch.
5,000+ opt for smartphone rebate; RM500 price cap removed (Updated)
Nearly 5,500 people from ages 21 to 30 had registered for the Youth Communications Package (YCP) which offers an RM200 (US$65) rebate for the purchase of smartphones, as at 7pm on Jan 1, the first day of the offer, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement. Meanwhile, the Cabinet has agreed to remove the RM500 price cap, The Malaysian Insider reported.
