NEXT Academy offers scholarships to underprivileged students via RM1mil fund

NEXT Academy, a tech school in Malaysia which is founded and ran by Malaysians, has set aside a RM1 million scholarship fund for students who are interested in computer programming.

The organisation intends to help underprivileged students.

This scholarship will enable students to pick up programming skills in less than three months through an immersive and hands-on programming course. Upon graduation, NEXT Academy will also help the students connect to career opportunities within the industry.

“The economy is changing fast, job cycles are moving faster. These days, trends are hard to predict but one thing’s for sure, everyone is talking about being ‘digital’,” said NEXT Academy co-founder and CEO Josh Teng (pic, above).

The Malaysian government has often talked about introducing programming as a core subject in schools. Many schools, especially private schools, have already introduced various programmes to prepare their students for the digital world.

The ones who will be missing out are the underprivileged students who missed the government’s new initiative and have no access or exposure to programming. Thus, they may end up losing out in the new economy.

“2017 is our special year. We have always wanted to give back to the community to the best of our abilities. We want to be able to empower underprivileged students who are hungry and have the potential to excel in this field,” said a staff at NEXT Academy.

NEXT Academy was incorporated in July 2014. The school runs nine-week coding and digital bootcamps throughout the year, and has since trained almost 400 students in the field of computer programming.

The computer programming “bootcamp” concept was first brought back from the United States by Teng.

Formerly known as Code Division, NEXT Academy has partnered with MaGIC to train their first 100 students who have since started their own tech companies, worked as software developers or chose to freelance in the field of tech.

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants will be required to undergo NEXT Academy’s screening process stated in the website.
