TRAVEL search site Wego.com has appointed Matthew Varley (pic) as chief operating officer, saying he will report to chief executive officer and co-founder Ross Veitch and will be based at the company’s headquarters in Singapore.
“Wego is growing extremely rapidly and is now operating across 52 markets worldwide with more than 80 employees,” Veitch said in a statement issued by the company.
“Matt’s strengths as an all-rounder, [and his] Asian market knowledge and previous experience scaling online travel businesses made him the perfect choice to drive the next phase of Wego’s expansion,” he added.
Varley joins Wego from the Wotif Group where he held various senior executive roles over eight years both in Australia and Asia.
He started with the company, which is also in the online travel business, in 2004 before it listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. There, he led online marketing strategy for five years over a period where the Wotif Group’s revenues quintupled from A$23 million to A$121 million.
With three years of experience in South-East Asia based in Bangkok, Varley managed the operations of Wotif Group’s Asia business, expanding the team to nine offices and localising the product across Asian markets, Wego said.
“I look forward to working with Wego’s dedicated employees to build on their success, providing an ever more personalised experience for travellers, partners and advertisers,” Varley said.
He has a Bachelor of Internet Computing degree from Griffith University, and completed his executive education at the Melbourne Business School.
