GrabTaxi launches beta trial in JakartaTAXI-booking mobile app company GrabTaxi continued its regional expansion with the launch of its beta trial in Jakarta, making Indonesia its sixth market after Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.

Jakarta is also the 15th city that GrabTaxi operates in, the company said in a statement.

“Since the mobile app was first launched in 2012, the response from commuters around South-East Asia has been amazing,” GrabTaxi founder and group chief executive officer Anthony Tan (pic) said, adding that one GrabTaxi cab is booked every two seconds regionally.

“Drivers who joined GrabTaxi all report an increase of between 30% and 300% of their take-home income,” he claimed.

Agus F. Abdillah , Commissioner of PT. Metro Asia Pasifik, one of GrabTaxi’s strategic partners in Indonesia, said “We are extremely happy to work with a technology platform like GrabTaxi, a regional company that has such a strong brand and ethos.

“Opportunities abound and we look forward to exploring them together as we expand in Indonesia,” he said.

In early April, GrabTaxi (known as MyTeksi in its home market of Malaysia), announced it had secured Series A funding with existing investor Vertex Venture Holdings as the lead investor. The company declined to disclose the amount, but an English daily put it at US$10 million.

The good news did not stop there, with the company announcing in late May that it had raised more than US$15 million in Series B funding, led by Silicon Valley-based GGV Capital with participation from new investor Qunar, as well as Vertex Venture Holdings.

The Series B funding came in the wake of the company launching a premium ride service called GrabCar, which runs on the same platform as GrabTaxi, in Kuala Lumpur. The GrabCar service was also launched in Manila on May 22.

With over 1.2 million downloads of the GrabTaxi mobile app around the region and with 250,000 users per month, GrabTaxi is the market leader in South-East Asia, the company claimed.
