Geneva’s Seedstars World makes its debut in Malaysia

GENEVA-based Seedstars World (SSW), initiated by venture firm Seedstars SA, will make its debut in Malaysia on Sept 9 as part of its journey to emerging markets and fast-growing startup ecosystems.

MAD Incubator’s Startup Hub in Putrajaya will host the event, with support provided by national ICT custodian Multimedia Development Corp through its Digital Malaysia programme and the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC Malaysia) project.

Digital Malaysia aims to transform the nation into a digital economy, while MSC Malaysia seeks to further develop the ICT industry.

“It is a great opportunity for us to partner with Seedstars World and provide our local startups an international platform on which they can present their ideas,” said MAD Incubator founder and chief executive officer Andrew Wong.

After what it describes as a first successful edition in 2013 across 20 cities, SSW expanded its competition massively to more than 30 countries.

Regional winners will be invited back to Geneva to pitch for an equity investment of up to US$500,000 in February, 2015.

The regional events feature up to 20 startups which must prove their worth in six minutes of pitching time and withstand the questions from a local jury of experts, and a Seedstars World representative, MAD Incubator said in a statement.

“Indeed, our goal is to create the network for quality entrepreneurs around the world and help entrepreneurs, accelerators, incubators, co-working spaces and investors to interact with one another,” she added.

At the regional level, Seedstars World is also partnering with Galixo, a boutique consultancy based in Singapore which works with startups in developing their business strategy and in entering new markets at a global level.
