Samsung declares ‘smarter living’ focus

SAMSUNG Electronics Co Ltd declared a focus on “smarter living” with a host of new products, and confirmed it would be rolling out its Samsung Pay mobile-payment service to select markets in South-East Asia and Oceania this year, starting with Australia and Singapore.

Samsung will continue to introduce “ground-breaking products and services” that will “revolutionise smarter living” and bring Internet of Things (IoT) technology into consumers’ everyday lives, said Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia and Oceania president and chief executive officer Yong Sung Jeon.

“At Samsung, we have always placed our customers’ needs at the heart of everything we do, and we have a stellar track record of launching thoughtful innovations that enhance our customers’ quality of life.

“Through deep consumer insights, Samsung will continue to grow and evolve with consumers’ evolving needs as they go through different stages of their lives,” he said at the ongoing Samsung South-East Asia Forum 2016 in Kuala Lumpur which kicked off today (Feb 1).

The company first announced Samsung Pay (pic above) at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early last year, with MasterCard being the first to get on board. The service is currently only available in the United States and South Korea.

At the recently-concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the company said Samsung Pay would be rolled out to Australia, Brazil and Singapore sometime this year, and China, Spain and the United Kingdom by the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the new products unveiled at the SEA forum include boundless curved SUHD TVs with quantum dot displays; the Samsung AddWash washing machine; the Family Hub refrigerator; two new editions of the Gear 2 Classic; and the Galaxy TabProS 2-in-1 tablet powered by Microsoft Corp’s Windows 10 operating system.

Prices for the new products were not available.

The company also launched its regional ‘mySamsung’ programme, an ownership programme that allows customers to manage their devices through the mySamsung mobile app.

The Android app is already available in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, and will be rolled out “soon” in New Zealand and Taiwan, company officials said.
