ARE you craving for a pure stock Android experience on your Xiaomi device? Xiaomi has heard your cries and answered with its second-generation stock Android models the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite.

While the specs of the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite are essentially the same, the two models have some improvements over their predecessor. With the upgrades, the two models edge closer to the mid-range category.

The Mi A2 packs its hardware within a very premium feeling aluminium unibody construct. It features a 5.99-inch IPS screen with a 1,080 x 2,160 resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

A key improvement in the Mi A2 lies in its cameras. The rear dual cameras are interesting as they both have the same focal length, doing away with the telephoto from the previous version.

Instead, you get a 20-Megapixel and 12-Megapixel sensor (f/1.75) with large 1.25um pixels that are said to pull in more light for better low-light capture. Users can choose the sensor depending on the scene with the 20-Megapixel (f/1.75) said to be better in low-light thanks to its Super Pixel technology.

The front selfie camera holds a 20-Megapixel Sony IMX376 sensor with 1um pixels and has a dedicated LED flash for selfies. It is said to be powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and benefits from Super Pixel technology for better low-light capture.

Within the Mi A2, you get an updated Snapdragon 660 chipset along with up to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage on the top model. The base model comes with 32GB of storage which can be limiting as there is no microSD card slot.

While the phone is 7.3mm thin, the battery remains at 3,000mAh and is said to last through a full day of usage. To maintain this slim profile the Mi A2 gives up the headphone jack but still retains the USB-Type C port.

Xiaomi will be bringing in two variants of the Mi A2. The 4GB + 64GB will cost US$246 (RM999) while the 6GB + 128GB model will cost US$295 (RM1,199). Three colours will be available at launch on Aug 4: gold, blue and black.

For the budget conscious

Launching alongside the Mi A2 is the Mi A2 Lite. It boasts the same specs of the original Mi A1 with a Snapdragon 625 chip but now has a trendier 5.84-inch FullView screen (1,080 x 2,280) with a notch.

Xiaomi has also shaved the sides of the phone, making it slimmer and easier to handle with one hand.

Another big change on the Mi A2 Lite is the inclusion of a bigger 4,000mAh battery which the company claims is good enough for six-hours of non-stop gaming or 34 hours of music playback.

In terms of camera offerings, the Mi A2 Lite has 12-Megapixel and 5-Megapixel rear camera with the 12-Megapixel one serving as the primary lens, boating 1.25um pixels. Meanwhile it has a 5-Megapixel selfie camera.

Specs-wise the Mi A2 Lite offers the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. You still get a dedicated microSD card slot to expand storage.

The Mi A2 Lite will be available come Aug 18 for US$172 (RM699). The device will also be available in gold, blue and black.
