Microsoft's new Surface Pro emerges

MICROSOFT has launched the latest generation of its Surface Pro device line in Malaysia. Much like the previous iterations of the Surface Pro, the design has not changed much since the original model in 2013. The 12.3-inch display (2,736 x 1,866 resolution) is touch-enabled just like its predecessor.

Though it appears to be  a spitting image of its predecessor, the new Surface Pro is said to be redesigned from the inside out and possesses subtle retouches like softer, rounded edges to the camera that make it fade into the bezel. It measures just 8.5mm thin and weighs 800g making it lightweight enough to be carried wherever you go. Microsoft has even managed to squeeze in a bigger 45-watt-hour battery compared to the previous version which had a 39-watt-hour battery that it says lasts up to 13.5 hours.

Most notably, it features an improved integrated kickstand and supports a detachable keyboard that allows the device to switch seamlessly between laptop and tablet form.  It now has a lower angle of 165 degrees compared to the previous version which could only lower by 150 degrees. Dubbed Studio Mode by Microsoft, the lower incline gives it a better angle for use with the Surface Pen stylus to draw and take notes with.

The new Surface Pro also packs more power with a fanless design for the Core m3 and Core i5 versions of the device, though the i7 version of the device still requires fans.

Speaking of the Surface Pen, the stylus accessory will be sold separately this time at RM299. The pen itself has also undergone some improvements and now offers greater pressure sensitivity with a level of 4,096 which Microsoft claims to be akin to using a pen on paper.

Underneath the hood, the new Surface Pro can be configured up to a seventh generation Intel i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM and up to a 512GB solid-state drive. At the top-end of the line, the Surface Pro carries an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 for driving the graphical capabilities of the device.

It will, of course, run on Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) and comes with other Windows-centric features like Windows Hello for easy sign-in using the built-in camera. In terms of port selections, it maintains a USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort, microSDXC card reader, 3.5mm headphone jack and sports a newer Type-C USB port.

Microsoft's new Surface Pro is available now and retails at a starting price of US$879 (RM3,699) for the Intel Core m3, 128GB, 4GB RAM and Intel HD Graphics 615 version and goes up to US$2,375 (RM9,999) for the Intel Core i7, 512GB, 16GB RAM and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640.

In terms of accessories, the new Surface Pro is compatible with the redesigned Surface Pro Signature Type Cover is wrapped in Alcantara material that is said to come in three colours: platinum, burgundy and cobalt blue, which the company claims to offer a more comfortable typing experience. In addition, it has LED backlighting and carefully laid key spacing for fast, fluid typing. According to Microsoft, the new Type Covers retail for RM669.
