HUAWEI’S Nova 2 Plus may be targeted at the aspiring youth market but it also caters to the budget-conscious user in search for a decent mid-range smartphone.

The 5.5-inch Nova 2 Plus exhibits a very minimalist design that strips away any accents or antenna bands that you saw in Huawei’s previous handsets. Featuring a metal unibody construct, everything seamlessly blends together.

You may mistake it for a certain other flagship phone but it does a good job looking the part from its glossy sides right down to the matte finish on the rear.

Around the sides you will find that it has a USB-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, speakers on the bottom and a fingerprint reader on the rear.

The display itself is a full HD LCD screen packing a high pixel density to keep images and text looking sharp.

Underneath it packs Huawei’s own Kirin 659 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It runs on Android Nougat with Huawei’s EMUI skin running on top.

In terms of battery, the Nova 2 Plus carries a 3,340mAh battery with quick-charging capabilities despite its svelte form.

Coming down to the cameras, you get a 12-Megapixel and 8-Megapixel dual camera setup with a bright f/1.8 aperture. In addition, it allows users to zoom in by up to 2x without loss of quality and has the ability to add a bokeh (blurred background) effect to your photos.

The big surprise here is the 20-Megapixel selfie camera on the front that clearly paints this handset as a selfie lovers’ dream come true. Of course, packing extra megapixels on a tiny smartphone sensor isn’t necessarily going to produce gorgeous pictures but it is clear that Huawei is marketing this to the selfie crowd.

The Huawei Nova 2 Plus is available now in Malaysia in three colours: gold, blue and black. It has a suggested retail price of US$467 (RM1,999).
