Intel expands Xeon line

  • 28 new chips from three families
  • More choice for IT managers, company claims

INTEL Corp has expanded its Xeon processor portfolio with new products which it claims are designed to address a broad and emerging set of server requirements and provide IT managers with additional choice and flexibility.

The company introduced 28 processors across three product families: Eight from the E5-4600 product family and nine processors from the E5-2400 product family to complement the E5-2600 line. It also announced the availability of 11 processors from the E2-1200v2 product family.

The E5-4600 processors are ideal for a wide range of technical compute applications, such as scientific research and financial services, the company said in a statement.

They deliver up to 88% higher performance than a comparable Xeon processor E5-2600 product family-based server and up to 3.8 times the prior generation 2-socket Xeon processor 5600 series-based server, Intel claims.

For small and medium businesses looking to upgrade from a single-socket configuration to a dual-socket server, the E5-2400 product family delivers a strong balance of energy-efficient performance and affordability while supporting core features of the E5 family, it added.

The E3-1200 v2 family is an entry-level server and workstation processor built for the demands of small business customers, delivering up to 32% greater energy efficient performance.

System manufacturers expected to announce platforms based on the Intel Xeon processor E5-4600/2400 product families and the Intel Xeon processor E3-1200 v2 product family include Acer, Asus, Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM and Lenovo.
