Yahoo and Viddsee to bring short films to your screen

  • Films available to Yahoo users across Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines
  • Dedicated Viddsee Asian Short Films channel on the Yahoo Entertainment site

YAHOO said it was collaborating with Viddsee, an online video platform for curated micro-cinema content, to bring short films to the forefront.

This partnership will help showcase award-winning short films by local independent filmmakers across Asia, made available to Yahoo users through a dedicated Viddsee Asian Short Films channel on the Yahoo Entertainment site.

The films will be available to Yahoo users across Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines, the two said in a statement.

“Short film viewings are often limited to film festivals. We are changing the game by bringing our vast user base to some incredible film content,” said Alan Soon, managing editor of Yahoo South-East Asia.

“Through this unique partnership, our users will be able to view the best short films across South-East Asia and honour the work of Asian filmmakers,” he added.

One of the short films, The Rapist, written and directed by Diane Ventura of the Philippines, tells the story of a young man accused of rape sent for psychiatric evaluation, where he recalls and narrates the details of what transpired the night of his alleged assault.

The short film stars veteran Filipino character actress Cherie Gil and newcomer Marco Morales in the lead. The film ended up getting nods from the International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM) in New York, making it to the Most Popular Films and Best Short Film lists.

The line-up of premieres on Yahoo will include Hajat by Ken Kin (Malaysia), Echo by Lincoln Chia (Thailand/ Singapore) and Paper Boxes by Melinda Tan and Ho Jia Jian (Singapore).

“We are excited to take Asian short films to the next level by showcasing them through the Yahoo network,” said Viddsee cofounder Ho Jia Jian.

“This partnership will surely help bring short films and filmmakers to the forefront, thus elevating this category to a wider audience.”
