Icron and QEOS announce wireless breakthrough

  • Industry’s first consumer-ready implementation of wireless USB link over 60GHz
  • Live demo at world’s largest AV show, InfoComm14 in Las Vegas

CANADA’S Icron Technologies Corporation and Malaysia’s Quantum Electro Opto Systems Sdn Bhd (QEOS) have announced what they say was the industry’s first successful implementation of an indoor-optimised 60GHz wireless USB 2.0 link with QEOS’ new 60GHz single-chip transceiver.

The transceiver delivers wireless multi-gigabit throughput and is optimised for indoor usage, the two companies said in a joint statement.

The new solution is powered by Icron’s ExtremeUSB extension technology and the QEOS’ single-chip CMOS (complementary metal–oxide semiconductor) millimetre wave connectivity solution to wirelessly transfer data or video over USB (Universal Serial Bus).

Icron and QEOS announce wireless breakthrough“USB over wireless offers customers an elegant and flexible extension solution for installations where eliminating cables proves beneficial,” said Icron president and chief executive officer Robert Haefling (pic).

“Moreover, joining with QEOS to deploy a millimetre-wave 60GHz wireless solution is very compelling as it provides a future development path toward supporting USB 3.0, 3.1 and HD video applications,” he added.

The two companies are holding a live concept demonstration at InfoComm14 at the Las Vegas Convention Centre from now until June 20. InfoComm is billed as the largest professional AV (audiovisual) show in the world, with more than 950 exhibitors and 35,000+ attendees from over 110 countries.

Icron and QEOS announce wireless breakthrough"We are excited to work with Icron to combine our industry’s first 60GHz single-chip CMOS solution with its impressive USB extension technology to demonstrate the first indoor use, consumer-friendly 60GHz USB link,” said QEOS chief executive officer Gabriel Walter (pic).

“We are confident this demonstration will quickly pave the way for new exciting products in consumer, industrial and prosumer markets," added Walter, a Digital News Asia Digerati50.

Earlier in June, QEOS announced it had acquired Silicon Valley-based Centric Technologies LLC's intellectual property assets and people in a US$40-million (RM129-million) deal.
