Avnet and Red Hat in pact to offer OSS to enterprises

  • Avnet to distribute full range of Red Hat solutions, extending open source reach into new verticals
  • New centre lets companies test-run compatibility of OSS solutions with their existing IT systems

Avnet and Red Hat in pact to offer OSS to enterprisesAVNET Technology Solutions has signed a distribution agreement in Malaysia with Red Hat Inc to offer open source enterprise solutions locally.

Under the agreement, Avnet will distribute the full range of Red Hat solutions, which include Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualisation and Red Hat JBoss Middleware solutions in Malaysia.

The two have also jointly set up the open source-based Avnet Solutions Centre (ASC) that will be open to all Avnet and Red Hat customers and partners in the country, Avnet said in a statement.

Linux platforms, open source operating systems and servers are poised to “leverage the growing trends of cloud computing, big data and mobile technologies,” said Avnet Technology Solutions Malaysia general manager Chiew Yue Lam (pic, right).

According to IDC, overall server revenue shrank 7.7% year-over-year. However, Linux bucked the trend to grow 3.4% year-over-year.

“We see growing demand for open source solutions in Malaysia. Therefore, partnering with Red Hat is a step towards our goal of being the leading IT distributor [here],” Chiew said.

Avnet claimed that the collaboration also makes it the first and only Red Hat distributor in Malaysia to offer facilities for companies to test-run the compatibility of open source solutions with their existing IT applications and systems.

“Cost and implementation are key challenges that often hinder local companies from adopting new technologies.

“The ASC addresses these concerns by allowing companies to test and select the right technology solutions for their IT requirements, which reduces the risks associated with migration,” Chiew said.

“Companies can also gauge the level of return from their IT investments more accurately,” he added.

The ASC is an IT infrastructure test-bed equipped with servers, virtualised machines and integration services. It was primarily designed for proof of concept activities, IT solution migration testing, demonstrations, and IT skill learning and training programmes, Avnet said.

The partnership with Avnet is in line with Red Hat’s recently announced business strategy and increased investment into its channel partner ecosystems in the region.

“With Avnet's expertise and Red Hat's portfolio of open source IT solutions, we are confident that this collaboration can bring greater value to both partners and customers alike in Malaysia, as well as extend our business reach into key verticals such as government and financial services,” said Damien Wong (pic above, left), general manager of Red Hat Asean.
