Maxis’ data and cloud computing facility gets Tier III certification

  • Facility built by data center infrastructure service provider HDC, in collaboration with Maxis
  • Certification in line with Govt’s EPP3 to establish Malaysia as a World Class Data Center Hub

Maxis’ data and cloud computing facility gets Tier III certificationCOMMUNICATIONS service provider Maxis Berhad announced that the facility which houses its data center and cloud computing services has been awarded Uptime Institute’s Tier III Certification (Certification of Design).

The facility, built by data center infrastructure service provider HDC, in collaboration with Maxis, is the first and only in Malaysia to be accredited with such a certification, the company claimed.

The certification was awarded for the data center’s “consistency in its procedures for operations, maintenance and support of the critical infrastructure systems which are key to ensuring continuous availability,” Maxis said in a statement.

The Uptime Institute, a New York-headquartered global organization, provides third-party data center research, education and consultation focused on improving performance and efficiency.

The certification is supported by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) under the Entry Point Project 3 (EPP3): Malaysia as a World Class Data Center Hub, and part of the Business Services National Key Economic Area, which is under the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), Maxis added.

The certification “reinforces Maxis’ commitment in providing world class services to our business customers in terms of end-to-end solutions for connectivity, managed services, cloud computing and data center,” said Fitri Abdullah, head of Maxis Business Services.

This is “in line with the Governments plan as part of the EPP3 to establish Malaysia as a World Class Data Center Hub,” he added.

The EPP3 aims to establish Malaysia as the preferred destination for data center investors and increase the supply of such space. The development of these centers is seen as a vital economic growth driver and with this EPP, MDeC hopes to add RM2 billion (US$654 million) to the Gross National Income (GNI) through the data center segment alone by 2020.

“The Uptime Institute’s Tier III Certification (Certification of Design) will certainly drive the confidence of market leaders such as Maxis to provide world-class data center and hosting services,” said MDeC chief operating officer said Ng Wan Peng.

“As the lead agency tasked to drive the programs identified under the EPP3, MDeC will continue its focus on building the 3 ‘Cs’ of local data center facilities; Capability, Capacity and Credibility which encompasses international certification not only for the DC building but also for the workforce within the DC industry,” she added.

Chuah Tai Eu, HDC executive director, said, “We are proud to be working with Maxis in supporting its data center services, and believe that this partnership will help spur the growth of the local data center industry.”
