Disrupt #28: Highs & Lows of 2015

  • Cheryl Yeoh and MaGIC will surely be key talking points
  • Panellists and audience get to grade the ecosystem in 2015

Disrupt #28: Highs & Lows of 2015READERS based in Kuala Lumpur may have noticed that Digital News Asia (DNA) has stopped having our Disrupt series of monthly industry networking and sharing events.

The first of these events, at times organised in cooperation with the Technopreneurs Association of Malaysia (TeAM), kicked off in September 2012 with MOL Global founder and executive chairman Ganesh Kumar Bangah and the then Multimedia Development Corporation chief executive officer (CEO) Badlisham Ghazali.

The main reason for us launching DNA Disrupt was to ensure that there was a regular industry networking event, which we wrapped around a panel discussion on relevant ecosystem developments.

Disrupt went on regularly until our kickoff Disrupt for 2015, which was held in January. What happened was that we then realised the ecosystem had become rich with regular networking events, organised by both entrepreneurs and government agencies.

There was no need for a regular DNA Disrupt anymore. We decided we would only host a Disrupt if we had a hot topic or special panellist.

But we feel we have to open 2016 by taking a look back on 2015 and discussing some of the highs and lows of the year.

No prizes for guessing that Cheryl Yeoh’s surprise resignation as the CEO of the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) will dominate the conversation.

But such was the growth of the ecosystem in Malaysia that I am sure we will not be short of either highs or lows of the year.

Disrupt #28: The Highs and Lows of 2015 is brought to you by Cyberview, whose managing director Faris Yahaya is one of our three panellists.

He will be joined by Dr V. Sivapalan, the cofounder of Proficeo Consultants and also the president of the Malaysian Business Angels Network; and Jamaludin Bujang, CEO of Malaysian Venture Capital Management (Mavcap). Both are also inaugural DNA Digerati50.

And as has become the norm at Disrupt, you the audience are the fourth panellist and I am sure you will not be short of thoughts on your pick of the high and low points of 2015.

I remember we ended last December’s Highs and Lows of 2014 by asking the panellists to grade the Malaysian ecosystem, and the average score was 6 out of 10. I wonder what this year’s average will be. You need to be there to give your input though!

Admission is free. Disrupt #28 will be held on Jan 5, 2016 from 6pm-7.30pm, at the TM R&D office at TM Innovation Centre, Linkaran Teknokrat Timur, Cyberjaya, Selangor, 63000.

Special thanks to Cyberview for sponsoring the event and TM R&D for being venue hosts.
