UTeM first Asean university to become Dassault ‘academy member’

PARIS-based 3D design software company Dassault Systèmes said that Universiti Teknikal Malaysia (UTeM) has been awarded the ‘Dassault Systèmes Academy Member Label.’

UTeM is the first university in Asean of 23 institutions worldwide to receive this label for using the latest technology for teaching purposes, and for showing tangible efforts in increasing the benefit of Dassault Systèmes’ tools for student employability and curriculum quality, the company said in a statement.

The Dassault Systèmes-UTeM partnership, sealed more than a year ago, is helping transform engineering education in Malaysia by paving the way for a new dimension in learning and teaching for UTeM’s teaching staff and students.

The students have been exposed to technology-assisted real-life industry learning and experience, Dassault said.

“Early stage exposure to 3D design software and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) solutions has taken the students to a real-world level and provided them with relevant hands-on experience,” said Syahrul Azwan Sundi, a lecturer at UTeM’s Faculty of Engineering Technology.

“These strong fundamentals equip them with the knowledge, competencies and skills that augur well for their future employment,” he added.

Under the partnership, UTeM is also provided with technology and expertise from the combined experience of the University of Versailles, France (UVSQ) and Dassault Systèmes. UVSQ is an early awardee of the Dassault Systèmes Academy Member Label.

“We are delighted that our 3DExperience platform, which provides businesses and people with virtual universes to imagine sustainable projects, is bringing change to UTeM’s curricula and, in the process, providing the realistic industrial experience and up-to-date skills that give students an edge when they enter the job market,” said Samson Khaou, managing director of AP South, Dassault Systèmes.

“The significant progress of this innovative approach drives Dassault Systèmes to further invest in smart professional training partnerships with educational institutions around the world, to develop skills and harness the potential of future generations of engineers – starting in the classroom and taking them beyond,” he added.
