PSDC’s computer engineering lab gets ‘Cisco-enabled’ via Dimension DataINFORMATION technology (IT) services provider Dimension Data said it is equipping the computer engineering lab at the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) with networking gear from Cisco Systems Inc.

The initiative is aimed at providing students with the practical exposure necessary to propel them in their career, thus producing talents that are up to par with industrial standards, Dimension Data said in a statement.

“The rapid change in technology and its impact [on] the industry prompts training centres like PSDC to constantly stay abreast with the latest developments,” said PSDC chief executive officer Muhamed Ali Hajah Mydin (pic).

“As PSDC operates in a tripartite model involving the Government, industry and academia, our mission is to support the manufacturing and services industries, and provide them with up-to-date training and education programmes to ensure that their workforce is trained with the required skillsets.

“We look forward to work closer with Dimension Data to further improve the quality of education, with the vision of advancing the local ICT industry at large,” he added.

Dimension Data said it is widening its footprint in the local tertiary education sector, and is advocating the pivotal role of education in creating a capable workforce.

The company said it is constantly exploring the ways of improving the quality of undergraduates by working with leading industry-led training centres like PSDC through knowledge-based sharing partnerships.

This includes contribution of hardware and infrastructure that are crucial for students in their practical training, it said in its statement.

Dimension Data is providing four Cisco network modules, two Cisco supervisor modules, two Cisco switches, four Cisco chassis switches, one Cisco firewall and two racks.

The equipment will benefit students currently pursuing a course in Computer Engineering, as well as other relevant courses, Dimension Data claimed.

“It is mandatory for training centres to adapt to new teaching methodologies and technologies, guided by industrial trends, and to be prepared with the latest amenities to train graduates for the increasingly demanding marketplace,” said Dimension Data Malaysia chief executive officer Henrick Choo (pic).

“As technology evolves and develops at a rapid pace, there is a need for IT firms to work hand-in-hand with training centres to constantly improve the level of competency and professionalism, and Dimension Data is proud to be an enabler in this instance,” he added.

This marks Dimension Data’s first collaboration with an education institute in the northern Malaysian state of Penang.

Dimension Data has supported another leading private institution’s Cisco lab with equipment. These partnerships are part of its initiatives to extend its presence in the education sector, the company added.
