- Almost 2 decades as chairman of a poverty eradication foundation
Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), today announced the appointment of Md Alwi Che Ahmad as its non-executive Chairman, effective 1 December 2021, for a period of two years. He replaces Dr Rais Hussin who had a rocky and controversial 15 month stint where he clearly overstepped the authority of his role and behaved as executive chairman in his efforts to right many of the weaknesses he believed MDEC to be suffering from.
And, unlike Rais who came from a deep technology background, specifically in broadband and solar, Md Alwi does not and will likely exercise a light touch more in keeping with past MDEC non-executive chairmen.
The State Assemblyman for Kok Lanas, Kelantan, Md Alwi has held various top positions in government. He served as the Political Secretary to the Minister of Youth and Sports in 1990 to 1992 and to the Minister of Rural Development Malaysia from 1993 to 1999, before taking position as the Political Secretary to the Prime Minister in 2007 to 2009.
Prior to serving as State Assemblyman, he was also the Member of Parliament Ketereh from 2004 to 2008. A leading figure in poverty eradication, he has been serving as the Chairman of Yayasan Kemiskinan Kelantan since 1993.
Md Alwi has also held multiple corporate positions, including serving as Chairman to Silver Ridge Bhd from 2004 to 2008, Syarikat Permodalan Risda Bhd from 2006 to 2016, and KEMUBU Agricultural Development Authority (KADA) from 2014 to 2018. He is currently a Board Member of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) since 2020.
A professional Licensed Land Surveyor, Md Alwi is a Principal of AA Geomatics and Survey Consultants Firm and a Fellow of the Institute of Surveyor Malaysia.
His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Applied Science (Survey & Mapping) from the Western Australian Institute of Technology Perth (now Curtin University) and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM); on top of professional training in Hydrography and Seabed Mappings, Motorised Levellings, and Lidar Surveys and Mapping from Canada, Sweden, USA and China.
