Malaysia wins e-sports gold at SEA Games 2019

• Defeats Werit “Disdai” Popan from Thailand who was a favourite to win this event
• Boost is sponsoring four national e-sports teams in the SEA Games 2019

MALAYSIAN Hearthstone player, WKYew (pic) won the country’s first e-sports Gold medal on Dec 9 at the SEA Games 2019, defeating Werit “Disdai” Popan from Thailand who was a favourite to win this event with a score of 3-1. This Gold medal not only gives a #BoostForMalaysia in the medal tally but also in the local and regional e-sports industry.

WKYew is one of the nine e-sports players representing four e-sports teams carrying Boost e-wallet’s banner this SEA Games. Mohd Khairil Abdullah, chief executive officer of Boost said that every Malaysian should be very excited and proud to receive news of this historic win especially in a debut event.

“On behalf of Boost, we wish WKYew a big congratulations on winning Malaysia’s first e-sports Gold medal at an Olympic-recognised multi-sport competition. This win is a historic moment for the e-sports universe in Malaysia, cementing e-sports as a mainstream competitive sport in the country and Southeast Asia and is proof that Malaysia indeed does have incredible e-sports talent as well as immense potential to thrive.”

Malaysia Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman also took to Twitter to share the news of WKYew’s gold medal exploits.

When asked about his big win, WKYew said: “I am very happy and proud that I am able to win the gold medal for our country. I was confident going into this match. When Disdai pulled back one win in the second round, I had to tweak my strategy slightly to keep my edge over him. I’m happy to walk away from this competition in first place and would like to thank Boost in supporting me prepare for this competition.”

This SEA Games, Boost is also sponsoring three other national e-sports teams in a move to co-develop the country’s e-sports industry and talent. The homegrown e-wallet’s foray into e-sports is part of their #BoostYourGame campaign aimed to empower local e-sports talent with the resources they need to level up their game and skills.

In addition to WKYew, the e-sports athletes sponsored by Boost include Ranger, Malaysia’s top Starcraft 2 player, Seven, Drmcp, TaintedOnes, Kun, Ryo and Kc who make up Malaysia’s top Arena of Valor team as well as Zaba, Malaysia’s top Tekken 7 player. Zaba will be competing tomorrow for a chance to clinch another medal for Malaysia in e-sports.
