Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be high on the discussion topic list recently with various parties touting it as a game changer for almost every sector, from banking to manufacturing and more. While some skeptics had positioned it as another buzzword, the reality is that Malaysia is seeing AI impact the way we work, live and play, more heavily than we first initially thought.

AI has become a key catalyst for many growth areas, beginning with the advancement of 5G infrastructure to support rapid growth, to education, where the need for specialists and talent experienced in the field of AI is growing critical.

Recognizing the transformative powers of AI, the development of AI in Malaysia has been spurred by the Malaysian government via the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap (2022) and the Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics (AIGE) guidelines which was recently launched in September 2024.

Many tech entrepreneurs have decided to take the plunge into AI, developing solutions and services that cater towards various industries, from digital creative to logistics management. The possibilities seem to be endless in discovering how as a nation, we can innovate with AI to create newer and more robust offerings to market.

The following feature of three Malaysia Digital (MD) status companies actively involved in Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s (MDEC) Digital Exports program provide a glimpse into the multi-faceted applications of AI.

AI for critical decision making

DataMicron has established itself as a key leader in proprietary analytics platforms by providing crucial cloud-based solutions to large corporates in Malaysia. They work with several notable and international manufacturing companies that have a large base in the country.
By integrating AI into their services, their solutions are not just able maintain a high reliability but also conduct Big Data analytics at lightning speeds. This provides companies with better insights on supply chain management, budget reduction and may proactively alert businesses on proactive actions needed to optimize their overall production efficiencies.

The company recognized that Internet-of-Things (IOT) combined with AI would be a key innovation piece that would help their clients grow and expand with more accurate data. DataMicron has helped decision makers to be quicker to capitalize on opportunities and to develop proactive strategies that will shield them from threats, such as potential disasters, failures and other supply chain disruptions.

Better vision with AI in video technology

Combining AI with visual technology and IOT has helped various businesses in Malaysia beef up security and overall automated safety functions. Tapway, a local leading AI solutions company, found a gap between the physical and digital world and patch this using AI and IOT combined.

The company launched its VisionTrack recently, a system that automates quality inspections and utilizes Samurai, a vision AI solution for businesses. Here, AI helps to ensure safety around manufacturing plants and also provides tracking in the manufacturing process to ensure their clients machine lines are running optimally and accurately.

Tapway has also recently been the appointed vendor for all of Malaysia’s toll plazas, helping monitor traffic and providing efficiency reports for road transport. Here, their collected data combined with AI helps to provide crucial information to the toll management company and helps enhance overall efficiencies for road users at tolls.

The company continues to invest in new AI integrations, expanding their AI visual technologies to be utilized in various applications and industries. They hope to continue being a partner for local business growth and believes that more companies in Malaysia should explore AI to improve their overall service delivery.

Creative and AI – providing inspiration

As a wholly-owned subsidiary of INMAGINE Sdn Bhd, Pixlr is a company focused on providing SaaS tools for content creation and continues to make strides in the market by embracing AI as part of its suite of solutions for artist, creatives and marketeers. For background, Pixlr was acquired from Autodesk by the INMAGINE group in 2017 and subsequently spun out as an independent subsidiary in 2023 under Pixlr Pte Ltd which holds all of the SaaS assets such as Pixlr.com, Designs.ai, Vectr.com and Inabit.ai.

The progression in AI seemed like a natural one for the company as it recognized that AI would greatly alter the way artists and designers work with visuals. Acting on this belief Pixlr took on the expansion into AI-driven creative tools and focused on developing an AI partner for artists and marketeers by enhancing the creation, management, and distribution of digital assets.

AI has transformed the way digital assets are created, managed, and distributed by automating processes and enhancing creativity. This has created synergies within the creative ecosystem by allowing users to produce higher-quality content faster and more efficiently, ultimately driving innovation across multiple industries.

AI to reshape the nation

It is undeniable that AI is here to stay and will continue to be an asset that will help users, businesses and the economy grow. While many view the technology with skepticism, MDEC is poised to support the growth by working with the different authorities to continue building a supportive network comprised of infrastructure, tech talent and partnership to support.

While some fear AI and its controversies, MDEC, the nation’s lead agency in digital transformation, is optimistic in the benefits it brings to the nation. It provides different job opportunities to Malaysians, automating the lower income jobs and encouraging Malaysians to pursue high income jobs further developing a knowledgeable workforce to enable its vision of being a high-income nation before 2030. Through continued support via various initiatives such as the MD Founder’s Centre of Excellence (FOX), local businesses will be empowered to partake in this AI journey.
