Excited participants who took part at the Malaysia Techlympics recently.

Malaysia Techlympics 2022 managed to garner 1.03 million student and youth participants between the ages of seven to thirty years old throughout the nine month period that the competition was held.

Designed based on an inclusive, informal and interactive approach to learning and building confidence in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), the Malaysia Techlympics also managed to provide exposure to 150 children with special needs from eight schools and 545 indigenous children through its Inclusion Outreach tour program which was carried out in 66 locations across the country.

Malaysia Techlympics 2022 was executed by the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI) which is an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) with the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Education (KPM), Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Ministry of Rural Affairs (KPLB) as well as State Government representatives.

Mosti‘s Secretary General, Ts. Dr Aminuddin Hassim at the Closing Ceremony of the Malaysia Techlympics 2022 National Finals said, "Innovation and creativity have become key drivers of wealth for countries in this 21st century. In other words, the measure of a country's greatness in this era of technology is based on its ability to cultivate STI and fueling the thirst for invention."

Elaborating, he said, “What’s special about the Malaysia Techlympics is that this program also infuses an element of entrepreneurship which is expected to support our young innovators and inventors to take steps to further develop the creation of their ideas.”

With the theme of 'Connect, Compete, Celebrate', Mosti's flagship program aims to foster the interest of the young generation in STI through a more enjoyable approach. This approach can simultaneously cultivate the youth mindset, skill set and action in producing high-impact innovations as well as giving birth to the future generation of problem solvers and techno entrepreneurs.

Malaysia Techlympics 2022 also complements STI learning in helping to attract more students and youth to make the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) or STI as a future career choice, further applying this knowledge in their everyday life.

Participants were divided into groups and each competition was based on 'Problem Solving' where participants were required to generate innovation ideas that were based on a set theme.

A total of 32 competitions held under five main themes were organized which focused on fields involving Science, Engineering, Computing and Micro-Computers, Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, Drones, Mathematics, Creative Design and Animation as well as Printing and Three Dimensional Development (3D).

Penang managed to emerge as the overall champion and lay stake to the winner's throne by bringing home a total of 7 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 2 bronze medals.

Since the launch of Malaysia Techlympics in March, various learning activities have been implemented such as the Science Superstar Quiz, Future Transportation Tutorial Session, Learning with Arduino Workshop, Future Technology Webinar: Virtual Robotics Programming, Flight Science simulation, Practical Mathematics Workshop for Educators, BYOD (Build Your Own Design) webinars and creating AR/VR animations.

Most of these learning sessions were taught by professionals, practitioners and academics in line with the objective of fostering a culture of learning beyond the classroom. In addition, peer learning sessions, presentations and exhibitions by Young Innovator Icons were also organized.

Under this inclusion outreach program, a total of 26,645 students and 545 teachers as well as lecturers have been involved in Malaysia Techlympics 2022 activities.

In addition, a total of 5,800 teachers also benefited from the Training of the Trainers course in an effort to improve their skills in the STI field.

Also presented at the ceremony were the National Young Scientist Award (Physical Science) and the National Science Technician Award 2022, each of which fetched RM10,000 in cash, a certificate and trophy.

The National Young Scientist Award is recognition of the achievements of young scientists in research and development (R&D) of science and technology (S&T), while the National Technician (Science) Award recognizes outstanding achievements by Science and Technology (S&T) Technicians (Technicians or Laboratory Assistants) as well as semi-professional staff related to S&T. These awards are conferred under the National Science Week 2022 program.
