THE Kuala Lumpur chapter of Google’s Women Techmakers programme recently celebrated Malaysian women in technology with a special event in conjunction with International Women’s Day held at the Google Malaysia office.

As part of the programme’s worldwide recognition of the contribution women in technology, the event showcased talks by women on Android, Cloud, artificial intelligence and machine learning, Virtual Reality, Firebase, UI/UX and more.

The event also offered a hands-on workshop as well as networking opportunities.

“Women Techmakers provides visibility, community, and resources for women in technology globally. We are creating awareness to all Malaysian women involved in tech that there is a community for them.

“Our aim is to empower women in an industry dominated by men, by providing a community for them to share resources, welcome their contributions to the field, expand the ecosystem and in general, help women to help themselves,” said Nazlina Quadir (pic, above), the lead organiser of the Malaysian chapter of WTM.

The 100 plus participants made it one of the biggest meetups organised by the Kuala Lumpur chapter. Students made up 30% of the attendees, with half of them pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, while a notable 10% were male. Nearly 80% were new to the field, with 19 participants coming from a non-tech background.

“I’m very encouraged to see the community growing. This year we’ve featured women speakers who were first discovered from last year’s WTM event, where most of them came as participants. I’m so glad that women are coming together to provide a resource channel for all women in tech,” she added.

Since the establishment of Women Techmakers KL in 2015, it has seen a growing awareness of the ecosystem and resources for local women in tech. The chapter hopes to expand their event offerings and collaborate with other women tech communities at both local and international levels.
