Tune Talk aims for 1 million subscribers

DESPITE the competitive price war in the telco industry, Tune Talk believes it has what it takes to grow its customer base to one million subscribers within a year.

Currently at around 600,000 active subscribers in Malaysia, the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) targets to increase its subscriber base by leveraging AirAsia’s reach in regional countries, said Tune Talk chief financial officer Dajmarehan Zolkipli during a media briefing held after the MINI Cooper giveaway and Merdeka campaign launch on Aug 20.

The launch announced that users who sign up with Tune Talk from Aug 20 to Sept 16 will receive 36GB of data for the first month and a total of 61GB throughout the campaign period.

Dajmarehan added that Tune Talk does not want to just be content in the local market scene, but intends on expanding to other countries.

“We are targeting regional countries and tapping into AirAsia routes to reach the markets. Our aim is to reach one million subscribers next year and also to synergise with AirAsia to boost our traveller’s plan,” she said.

As for the breakdown of their expansion plan, Dajmarehan stated that it will be explained in greater detail at a separate press conference, which they will announce at a later time.

Subscriber base affected by consumer trends

Notably, the current target of one million subscribers is still lower than its subscriber base three or four years ago, which was around 1.5 million subscribers.

Tune Talk chief marketing officer Joseph Lim acknowledged that the industry is highly competitive, adding that the trend has been moving from using prepaid to postpaid.

“Postpaid plans are getting cheaper. The lines are quite blurred. We see a lot of prepaid subscribers moving into postpaid for the past two years. But there are still a lot of people entering the prepaid market. Tune Talk is dealing with the youth segment who are first-time users who will start using prepaid before moving on to postpaid,” he explained.

Better transactions as a digital telco

Tune Talk aims to be a digital telco that gives a “seamless and hassle-free transactions” to their subscribers, said Dajmarehan.

Aside from improving transactions, there are also other aspects that would be involved in being a digital telco. Lim explained: “Being a digital platform, it’s all about connectivity. So a phone ultimately will become a platform that connects daily lifestyle elements.”

It also involves convenience for the users, he added. “When you use your cashless payments, your mobile wallets… The universal platform for all these utilities would be telcos. And that’s where we’re heading towards.”
