CelcomDigi Berhad and Selangor Red Giants (SRG), the esports arm of Selangor Football Club (SFC), have partnered to advance the esports industry and empower gamers with the necessary resources and skills for personal and professional growth. As part of SRG's transition, along with their Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports world champions from Yoodo, this partnership also aims to inspire and identify young talents in esports.

This initiative aligns with CelcomDigi’s commitment to nurturing young Malaysians, known as Generasi 5G, by encouraging the use of technology and connectivity with the right skills and responsible habits. As part of this exciting collaboration, two key initiatives will be launched next month:

A two-day bootcamp for 16–17-year-olds passionate about MLBB, designed to enhance their gameplay skills, team dynamics, and promote a positive esports culture.

A month-long Healthy Gaming Initiative for primary school students to introduce responsible gaming habits early on and spark an interest in esports.

CelcomDigi’s Head of Brand and Marketing Services, Chan May Ling, said, "This partnership ensures continuity and stability as SRG transitions from Yoodo. It reflects our commitment to the future growth of Malaysia’s esports industry."

"We aim to help the MLBB team continue thriving in this sector. Recognising young gamers' potential, we provide the platform and guidance they need to excel. Our goal is to build a sustainable ecosystem where players grow into world-class esports athletes who are both physically and mentally resilient," she added.

Selangor FC CEO, Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon, commented, “Esports in Malaysia is a key contributor to the economy today. What started as a hobby decades ago now offers a viable professional career path. With CelcomDigi’s support, our players can gain greater visibility and reach among young Malaysians."

“At the same time, we are changing the narrative around online gaming by showing parents and communities that esports can offer real career opportunities, cognitive development, and valuable soft skills while being enjoyable,” he added.

Encouraging aspiring MLBB gamers

Young esports enthusiasts can apply for the two-day bootcamp, scheduled for 27–28 October 2024. It will provide a comprehensive experience to enhance essential skills, team dynamics, and promote a positive esports culture. The programme will cover strategy, leadership, healthy competition, and mental resilience, preparing participants for competitive gaming while offering exposure to Malaysia’s esports sector.

Up to 30 participants will be selected based on their MLBB rank, with a minimum requirement of Mythical Glory 100 stars or higher. Preference will be given to CelcomDigi subscribers. Applicants must also share their gaming experience and submit a brief essay or video demonstrating their commitment to a positive gaming culture. Full application details will be announced on the official platforms of Selangor Red Giants and CelcomDigi on 15 September 2024.

Championing a healthy gaming culture

The Healthy Gaming initiative aims to promote responsible gaming habits among primary school students. SRG players, alongside experts, will lead educational activities covering both physical and mental well-being. The programme will commence in two selected Selangor schools on 21 October 2024, coinciding with World Mental Health Day, educating students about balancing screen time with physical activities and raising awareness about the risks of excessive gaming.
