Celcom Axiata appoints Imri Mokhtar as COO

  • Appointment accelerates Celcom’s operational excellence journey

Celcom believes the appointment of Imri Mokhtar as its new COO will reinforce its commitment to drive operational excellence throughout the organisation.

To further strengthen its endeavor in operational excellence, Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom) has appointed Imri Mokhtar as its new Chief Operations Officer effective 1 May 2020. Imri will provide leadership in the technology, digital transformation and various corporate functions within the enabler group. This includes network operations, digital enablement, IT, business transformations, program management, regulatory, legal and other corporate functions, driving operational excellence throughout the organisation.

Imri brings with him over 24 years of experience and will be joining Celcom from Telekom Malaysia (TM). Imri’s last held position in TM as COO oversaw business operations of unifi, TM ONE, TM Global clusters and IT & Network of TM Group. Imri was also TM’s Acting Group CEO from November 2018 to June 2019.

Prior to Imri’s appointment as TM’s COO, he was the Executive Vice President (EVP) of unifi. He first started his career with TM in 1996 and re-joined TM in 2005 and served in various positions in TM including as Vice President, Programme and Performance Management Office and EVP, Consumer. Prior to re-joining TM in 2005, Imri was with a pay-TV operator in Malaysia and also had a stint as a consultant with a global management consulting firm.

Imri is also a graduate from University College London with a Bachelor of Engineering (1st Class Honors), having also completed business and leadership programs at Cambridge Judge Business School and Harvard Business School.

Commenting on the new appointment, Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom said, “This new appointment is timely as we are setting a clear focus towards operational excellence and drive growth through innovation, digitisation and new business areas.”

Isham describes the appointment as another marker of Celcom’s ongoing fortitude in becoming a high-performing company. “Celcom remains committed to progress and spearhead digital frontiers to create a ‘win-win-win’ situation, leading towards building a more sustainable industry that will benefit the rakyat, the government and the nation’s digital ecosystem,” he stresses.
