WeChat hits 549mil global users, claims 95% penetration in Malaysia

TENCENT Holdings Ltd said its WeChat messaging app has reached 549 million monthly active users globally, up from the 500-million user milestone achieved three months ago in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2014.

In Malaysia, it claims a 95% smartphone penetration rate. Citing research released by GlobalWebIndex (GWI), it said the active user base in Malaysia has grown by 1,187% from Q1 2013 to Q3 2014.

WeChat is most popular with users between 16 to 34 years old, and this age group dominates more than 80% of the WeChat user base, Tencent said in a statement.

“We are excited about WeChat’s stellar growth momentum both globally and throughout Malaysia – a strong foothold for the first quarter of 2015,” said Louis Song, country manager for Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

“We will continue to focus on enhancing user interaction by broadening the activities from social and communications to gaming, entertainment, media content and beyond,” he added.
