MMU offers full scholarships in high-tech fieldsMULTIMEDIA University (MMU) announced that it is offering full scholarships to high-achieving students who want to pursue careers in the high-growth fields of Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or Bioinformatics.

The President’s Scholarship is being offered to applicants of MMU’s October 2013 intake, the university said in a statement. To qualify, students must have at least a CGPA of 3.75 for their STPM, UEC, or A-Levels certificate.

“This is a great opportunity for ambitious and talented students to get a head-start in their careers by earning industry acclaimed degrees from our university,” said MMU president Professor Dr Muhamad Rasat Muhamad.

The President’s Scholarship, worth about RM600,000 (US$183,070) in total, would be offered to 10 applicants who enrol into one of the selected Bachelor degree courses.

In Engineering, the courses are B.Eng (Hons) Electronics, B.Eng(Hons) Electrical, B.Eng(Hons) Electronics majoring in Computer, B.Eng(Hons) Electronics majoring in Telecommunication, and B.Eng(Hons) Electronics majoring in Nanotechnology.

In IT, the courses are Bachelor of Computer Sciences (Hons.), B.IT(Hons.) Data Communications and Networking, B.IT(Hons.) Information Technology Management, B.IT(Hons.) Artificial Intelligence and B.IT(Hons.) Security Technology.

In Life Sciences, the course offered is B.Sc. (Hons.) Bioinformatics.

“By offering the President’s Scholarship, the university is actually actively pursuing its mission,” said Prof. Rasat, noting that MMU was established in 1996 to support Malaysia’s ICT industry.

“We were tasked with enabling the nation’s drive towards an IT and knowledge-based economy and this is another means for us to intensify this initiative.

“This scholarship will enable us to attract the best talents the country has to offer and allow us to play a critical role in honing their talents in our strongest areas of discipline,” he added.

Aside from the academic qualifications, applicants would be assessed on their leadership traits and socio-economic background. Students with a good track record in extra-curricular, social and voluntary activities would be of particular interest to evaluators, MMU said in its statement.

The President’s Scholarship is the second scholarship offered by MMU. Currently, high-scoring SPM, STPM and A-Levels holders can apply for the Merit Scholarship, which offers either a 25% discount on tuition fees for students with 7As or 8As for SPM (CGPA of 3.74 for STPM and A-Levels).

Students with 9As and above for SPM (CGPA of 3.75 and above for STPM and A-Levels) would be eligible for a 50% discount on tuition fees.
